The Air-Sea Interaction lab has acquired and developed an extensive suite of instrumentation over time to best sample the upper ocean and lower atmosphere from a variety of different measurement platforms, encompassing multiple scales and measurement techniques. These platforms include fixed wing aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, large oceanographic vessels, manned floating instrument platforms, and unmanned ocean surface vehicles. Similar instrumentation is also used to perform laboratory experiments at the Hydraulics Laboratory at SIO. Please contact us for additional information on available instrumentation and sensor development capabilities. Follow the links below for more information on specific sensor platforms.
MASS
The MASS is a portable package of high-resolution instrumentation for airborne remote sensing applications.
Wave Glider
Wave Gliders are autonomous surface vehicles that can host a variety of different scientific instrumentation.
UAV Multirotor
A multirotor UAV with a 'MASS-lite' payload installed that includes lidar and visible imagery for remote sensing.
UAV Fixed-Wing
Instrumented payloads have been developed for both Boeing ScanEagle and Raytheon Manta UAV platforms.
R/P FLIP
R/P FLIP is a large floating platform that can accommodate a variety of sensors in multiple configurations.
Hydraulics Lab
The Hydraulics Lab at SIO offers many testing facilities for research, development, and student instruction.
